Cranes in Flight, Set of Three
A steel wall sculpture designed by Jeremy Franklin for Raven Steel Works, in a limited edition of only 100 hand-numbered sets. Three cranes, cut from steel and completed in Everraâ„¢ Finish in Black, Bronze, Copper or Cream.
Some pieces decorate a wall. A few change the way a room is read. Three Cranes in Flight belongs to the second kind. Three birds rise across the wall on a loose diagonal, necks fully extended, legs trailing behind, wings opened to their widest reach. It is the instant after lift-off, held perfectly still.
What separates this work from ordinary metal decor is the drawing. Jeremy Franklin designed each crane individually, and his hand remains visible in the steel: the long taper of the flight feathers, the layered coverts along the leading edge of each wing, the fine separations that let light pass through the plumage. From across the room, the cranes read as clean silhouettes. From a few feet away, they reward the kind of close looking usually reserved for a gallery.
THE COMPOSITION
Three cranes, three sizes. The largest leads and reads as nearest. The medium bird follows. The smallest trails behind and reads as the farthest in the flight. Together they create genuine depth on a flat wall, a sense of birds moving away into open sky. The arrangement is yours to set: a rising diagonal above a console or bed, a staggered climb up a stair wall, or a wide spread across a long wall that follows the line of the room.
LIGHT AND SHADOW
Each crane is mounted a full inch off the wall, so the light in the room completes the work. Morning sun lays a second, softer flight across the plaster. Lamplight in the evening draws the shadows in close and sharp. The piece looks different at nine in the morning than it does at dinner, which is precisely the point.
THE CRANE
In East Asian art the crane has long stood for longevity, fidelity and good fortune, and painters have studied its form for centuries. These cranes are stylized rather than literal. They recall the long-necked grace of the red-crowned crane without claiming any single species, which lets them sit as comfortably in a shingle-style house on the water as in a city apartment.
THE EVERRAâ„¢ FINISH
Every Raven Steel piece is completed in Everraâ„¢ Finish, our signature finishing process. Everra gives each design its rich, finished appearance and enduring character. It is the final touch that makes each piece feel considered and distinctive, and made to be enjoyed for years. Cranes in Flight is offered in four colors:
- Black: pure silhouette, the most graphic of the four. Strongest against white or warm-white plaster.
- Bronze: deep and warm, with the gravity of cast work. At home against wood paneling, shiplap and linen-toned walls.
- Copper: warm metal that catches low light and glows at the end of the day. Pairs with warm whites, sand and soft terracotta.
- Cream: a soft warm white, and the quietest of the four. On a muted wall such as fog blue, sage or greige, the cranes read almost entirely through their shadows.
DIMENSIONS (width x height, each crane)
- Large crane: 22.8 x 23.5 in (58.0 x 59.8 cm)
- Medium crane: 20.8 x 16.8 in (52.9 x 42.5 cm)
- Small crane: 14.7 x 7.9 in (37.4 x 20.1 cm)
Three Cranes in Flight is proportioned for the wall above a console, a bed or a dining sideboard, and holds its own on a stair wall or in an entry hall. Measurements are for each crane individually; the overall footprint depends on how you arrange them.
MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION
- 2 mm (approx. 14-gauge) laser-cut steel
- Everraâ„¢ Finish in Black, Bronze, Copper or Cream
- Two concealed standoffs per crane hold it 1 in (2.5 cm) off the wall; stainless steel screws, wall anchors and a paper hanging template included
- Suited to interior walls and covered patios. To preserve the finish, keep the cranes sheltered from direct weather
INSTALLATION
Each crane hangs independently, so the composition can be tuned to your wall. Lay the pieces on the floor beneath the wall first, then mark positions with painter's tape before installing. The included paper template marks the two drill points for each crane.
THE EDITION
Cranes in Flight is a strictly limited edition. Only 100 sets will ever be created in this design, across all three compositions and four finishes. Each set is hand-numbered on the reverse and arrives with a numbered certificate of authenticity that corresponds to it. Designed by artist Jeremy Franklin and commissioned exclusively for Raven Steel Works, the design will not be produced again once the edition is complete.
ALSO IN THE COLLECTION
Cranes in Flight is offered as three distinct works: Three Cranes, Four Cranes and Five Cranes. Each is composed as its own piece, not the same set with birds added. Four Cranes arranges the birds as two pairs within one flight. Five Cranes extends them into a full flight for longer walls. Both are available in our shop in the same four finishes.
A GIFT WITH MEANING
Cranes have long been associated with a long life and a lasting partnership, and steel is the traditional gift for an eleventh anniversary. For a new home, a wedding or a milestone anniversary, few gifts carry as much meaning or as much presence.
PRODUCTION AND SHIPPING
Each set is made to order. Production time: 3 to 5 days. Shipping: free within the United States. If anything about your set is not right, contact us and we will make it right.
