Cranes in Flight, Set of Four

A steel wall sculpture designed by Jeremy Franklin for Raven Steel Works, in a limited edition of only 100 hand-numbered sets. Four cranes arranged as two pairs, cut from steel and completed in Everra™ Finish in Black, Bronze, Copper or Cream.

Cranes are known for pairing for life, and they fly the way they live: close, matched, wingtip to wingtip. Four Cranes in Flight is built around that idea. Rather than a single line of birds, the composition is arranged as two pairs, a larger couple leading and a smaller couple following, so the wall reads as one flight made of two partnerships.

It is the most balanced of the three works in the collection. Where Three Cranes rises and Five Cranes travels, Four Cranes settles into equilibrium. That makes it the natural choice for a wall with a strong center: above a long dining table, between a pair of tall windows, over a bed flanked by matching lamps.

The drawing carries the same care at every size. Jeremy Franklin designed each of the four cranes individually, so no bird is a scaled copy of another. Look closely and the detail holds: tapered primaries, layered coverts along the leading edge of each wing, the open spaces between feathers that let the wall show through. It is work meant to be studied, not just seen.

THE COMPOSITION

Four cranes, four sizes. The Large and Medium cranes form the leading pair; the Intermediate and Small cranes follow as the second. The space between the pairs is yours to set. Hang them close for a unified piece above a sideboard, or open the gap to span the full length of a dining wall.

LIGHT AND SHADOW

Every crane is mounted a full inch off the wall. The result is a quiet second composition in shadow that shifts through the day: long and soft in the morning, crisp and close under evening lamps. Four birds become eight, and the wall is never quite the same twice.

THE CRANE

Across East Asian art the crane is an emblem of longevity, fidelity and good fortune. These cranes are stylized rather than literal, recalling the long neck and extended legs of the red-crowned crane without claiming a single species. The effect is timeless rather than themed, equally at ease in a clapboard house on the water and in a townhouse library.

It is the final touch that makes each piece feel considered and distinctive, and made to be enjoyed for years. Cranes in Flight is offered in four colors:

  • Black: pure silhouette, the most graphic of the four. Strongest against white or warm-white plaster.
  • Bronze: deep and warm, with the gravity of cast work. At home against wood paneling, shiplap and linen-toned walls.
  • Copper: warm metal that catches low light and glows at the end of the day. Pairs with warm whites, sand and soft terracotta.
  • Cream: a soft warm white, and the quietest of the four. On a muted wall such as fog blue, sage or greige, the cranes read almost entirely through their shadows.

Four Cranes in Flight is proportioned for a dining wall, a wall between windows, or the space above a sideboard or bed. Measurements are for each crane individually; the overall footprint depends on how you arrange the pairs.

MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION

  • 2 mm (approx. 14-gauge) laser-cut steel
  • Everra™ Finish in Black, Bronze, Copper or Cream
  • Two concealed standoffs per crane hold it 1 in (2.5 cm) off the wall; stainless steel screws, wall anchors and a paper hanging template included
  • Suited to interior walls and covered patios. To preserve the finish, keep the cranes sheltered from direct weather

INSTALLATION

Each crane hangs independently. Hang the leading pair first, centered on the wall or the furniture below, then place the second pair to set the rhythm of the flight. Painter's tape and the included paper template make the layout simple to plan before a single hole is drilled; the template marks the two drill points for each crane.

THE EDITION

Cranes in Flight is a strictly limited edition. Only 100 sets will ever be created in this design, across all three compositions and four finishes. Each set is hand-numbered on the reverse and arrives with a numbered certificate of authenticity that corresponds to it. Designed by artist Jeremy Franklin and commissioned exclusively for Raven Steel Works, the design will not be produced again once the edition is complete.

Cranes in Flight is offered as three distinct works: Three Cranes, Four Cranes and Five Cranes. Each is composed as its own piece, not the same set with birds added. Three Cranes rises on a single diagonal for walls with height. Five Cranes extends into a full flight for long walls. Both are available in our shop in the same four finishes.
