Cranes in Flight, Set of Five

A steel wall sculpture designed by Jeremy Franklin for Raven Steel Works, in a limited edition of only 100 hand-numbered sets. Five cranes in a full flight, cut from steel and completed in Everra™ Finish in Black, Bronze, Copper or Cream.

There is a point at which a group of birds stops reading as birds and starts reading as movement. Five Cranes in Flight is composed at exactly that point. Five cranes travel across the wall on a long, shallow arc, the largest leading, the smallest trailing far behind as a distant fifth. The eye does not stop on any one bird. It follows the flight from one end of the wall to the other.

This is the grandest of the three works in the collection, and the one most at home in architecture with scale: the upper wall of a double-height great room, the long run of a gallery hallway, the expanse above a stair. Where a single piece of art would sit like a postage stamp on a wall that size, Five Cranes holds the space and gives it direction.

As with every piece in the collection, the drawing is the point. Jeremy Franklin designed each of the five cranes individually, from the full-span lead bird to the small distant crane at the tail, and each carries the same depth of feather detail: tapered primaries, layered coverts, and open cutwork that lets the wall breathe through the wings.

THE COMPOSITION

Five cranes, five sizes: Large, Medium, Intermediate, Small and Distant. Hung in descending order, they create the strongest sense of depth in the collection, a flight that seems to recede into open sky. Set the arc shallow and wide to follow a long wall, or let it climb gently to carry the eye up a stair or toward a high ceiling.

LIGHT AND SHADOW

Each crane is mounted a full inch off the wall, and with five birds the shadow becomes a composition of its own. In morning light a second, softer flight appears beside the first. By evening, under lamps and sconces, the shadows draw in tight and the steel takes over. Few pieces change as completely between sunrise and dinner.

THE CRANE

For centuries East Asian painters have used the crane to express longevity, fidelity and good fortune, and a flight of cranes has long been read as a blessing on a household. These cranes are stylized rather than literal. They recall the long-necked grace of the red-crowned crane without claiming a single species, so the work belongs equally to a shingle-style house on the water and a modern great room.

  • Black: pure silhouette, the most graphic of the four. Strongest against white or warm-white plaster.
  • Bronze: deep and warm, with the gravity of cast work. At home against wood paneling, shiplap and linen-toned walls.
  • Copper: warm metal that catches low light and glows at the end of the day. Pairs with warm whites, sand and soft terracotta.
  • Cream: a soft warm white, and the quietest of the four. On a muted wall such as fog blue, sage or greige, the cranes read almost entirely through their shadows.

Five Cranes in Flight is composed for long walls: a living room, a gallery hallway, a stair hall, a covered porch or the space above a wide bed. Measurements are for each crane individually; the overall footprint depends on how you set the arc.

MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION

  • 2 mm (approx. 14-gauge) laser-cut steel
  • Everra™ Finish in Black, Bronze, Copper or Cream
  • Two concealed standoffs per crane hold it 1 in (2.5 cm) off the wall; stainless steel screws, wall anchors and a paper hanging template included
  • Suited to interior walls and covered patios. To preserve the finish, keep the cranes sheltered from direct weather

INSTALLATION

Each crane hangs independently. Start with the Large crane at the leading end of the wall, then work outward in descending size to set the arc. Lay the five pieces on the floor first and mark their positions with painter's tape; the included paper template marks the two drill points for each crane.

THE EDITION

Cranes in Flight is a strictly limited edition. Only 100 sets will ever be created in this design, across all three compositions and four finishes. Each set is hand-numbered on the reverse and arrives with a numbered certificate of authenticity that corresponds to it. Designed by artist Jeremy Franklin and commissioned exclusively for Raven Steel Works, the design will not be produced again once the edition is complete.

Cranes in Flight is offered as three distinct works: Three Cranes, Four Cranes and Five Cranes. Each is composed as its own piece, not the same set with birds added. Three Cranes rises on a single diagonal for walls with height. Four Cranes arranges the birds as two pairs, balanced for a wall with a strong center. Both are available in our shop in the same four finishes.
